I am new to 3reef, but I have had saltwater tanks for a couple years. I currently have a 20g and a 55g. I recently acquired a 260g oceanic tank, predrilled with the overflows built in. I know that I can't afford to set it up as a reef right now, but I couldn't pass up the deal it was only $100!! It is currently sitting in my garage. My buddy, who works at the LFS suggested I set up a species tank with a shark. Is 260g big enough for a shark? If so, what species and what would I need as far as environment? I am also considering just waiting until i get the money to set it up as a reef. My friend and I thought that I could use my current Year old 55g reef tank. Convert it into a sump and use the sand and live rock from it to seed my new 260g, and put all my fish from my 55g into the 260. What are your guys opinions? Should I just wait? I only have a couple hundred dollars now. Pictures of it below. Thanks!!

Congrats on the find!! I'd say wait. I think you could use the stuff from your 55 but was about pumps, skimmer heaters etc.. That baby is going to need some flow and a nice skimmer to take out debris. Esp with a shark. They are messy eaters from what I hear. The only reason I'm sating wait is when I set up my 120 I did not wait to do something as simple as drilling it and I regret it now.. I've found the best tanks are built slowly ensuring that the best components that can be afforded are used. Welcome to 3 Reef - Looking forward to seeing this baby come to life!! :)

Nothing is wrong with it...the guy who had it had to move and he couldn't take his tank with him. My friend said he was trying to sell it at the LFS, but was unsuccessful. Eventually he donated it to Goodwill and I bought it from there.

Could I put corals, or other specimens in with a bamboo shark like the ones in the link?

That is a great deal on the tank! Good score! What's the footprint on the tank? I would say maybe a coral cat or marbled cat depending on the depth etc. Also as stated above, you are going to have to consider the requirements for a shark. Filtration (skimmer etc) will have to be adequate as sharks will eat a lot and make a mess. You will want a large sump as well to accommodate lr as you will want as much space in the display as possible. They will most likely try to eat a lot of the fish that you try to put in with them as well. Food for them can also get expensive as they grow and eat more and more. There is a lot to consider and I am not trying to rain on your parade but keeping a shark is a decent undertaking and can prove to be just as expensive as a reef (depending on what kind of reef) setup. Either way I would take it slow and make sure you get the proper equipment etc. or you will be kicking yourself later.

    wow

LUCKY YOU!! I thought I got a good deal with my saltwater 75g for a $100...well, okay I guess I did..:)

You should turn yours into a pirahna or croc tank!!! Actually not a croc tank because that would make the overflow boxes pointless.
