my serpant star is loosing his legs. it started out with just the tips and has progressed up the legs so that now he has about 1 inch long legs all the way around. What is causing this? my parameters are in great shape. there is plenty of places to hide and plenty of food around for him to scavenge. any input would be helpful.

What is your nitrate and salinity? Is your salinity stable? How often do you add top off water and how much do you add at a time. How many gallons is your tank.

A common problem with star fish is low salinity or a changing salinity.

I just read yesterday that a serpent star can lose its legs and the regenerate rather quickly.

    Yes they can.

They can regenerate if what ever caused the damage in the first place is gone, they will normally come back pretty quickly.

What livestock do you have? My Coral Beauty has nipped my serpent before. The legs reginerate super fast though...so something must be hurting it constantly if its legs are going away rather than coming back.
