So I was in the beautiful island of Antigua earlier this month and did a bit of snorkling. I saw many cool things, but one of the types of fish that I thought was very cool, although I havn't seen them in LFS's..... after a bit of research, I believe is called a sergeant fish. These were small fish that schooled up as chromis do.
Has anyone had experience with this type of fish? Are they available in the hobby, are they reef safe? I'd really like to get some of these since they were very cool and would remind me of my trip.

If you are talking about sergeant major damsels, yes they are reef safe but tend to be a little aggressive.

    Is this the fish?

Yes, thats it, although they were a lot smaller and in large schools. I'm guessing they were juveniles whch is why they were schooled up?

Everything I've read about them says they are a schooling fish. They are damsels though so I'd expect some aggression. Also reef safe. Here's where I'll get mine if I decide to.

How big is your tank? What I'm reading is that when they're small they school up, but when they get bigger they get very aggressive.

Sergeant Major are SOMETIMES seen in the trade, but I've only had them by catching them myself. I would suggets you get one yourself with a net and drive home if you REALLY want one. They grow to around 4 inches when they are MONSTERS and lose almost all of their color. Interesting fish to say the least.

Sometimes? Any wholesaler worth their weight in salt will have them. They are a bread and butter item.

In the wild they may school but in aquaria more then 1 in a tank is an issue waiting to happen.

I have one that was wild cought not by me here in miami. If you snorkeling on the reef in key Biscayne there every where. Also my step day is from Antigua and my parents are moving there this year its really nice there. But the fish is a survivor. Eats well swims well has gotten big since I got it. But I have not noticed and real aggression from it.
