First off, before you buy a seahorse, check out ALL the availability of seahorses, noting the information supplied and the prices involved, and how they are bred.
DO NOT buy based on colour or patterns that can and usually do change when they get in your tank, or especially ciri appendages that most times disappear as the seahorse gets older.
Look for proper identification of the seahorse, not a made up name to try to make the seahorse seem like more than it really is. (i.e. H. erectus, H. reidi, H. zosterae)
Read more than just the site of the seller to get your FACTUAL information on seahorse keeping. While there are some differing opinions, there ARE opinions that can give you much better odds of success.
The hobby can be quite easy for some that luck in with stock and compatibility situations, but for most, it will be a challenging hobby.
There is a seahorse forum that most online seahorse keepers frequent that can help to sort out facts from fiction and increase your odds of success.
My point I'm wanting to get across is, to do a lot of research so that you minimize losses of livestock and don't pay high prices for something that is available for much less from other reputable breeding sources.

    Excellent points... K+.

One can't stress research enough with any facet of the SW hobby. Far too often I see someone asking for help with something that's sick or dying because they listened to a greedy LFS and purchased a fish or invert for which they or their system was incapable of providing proper care. With the resources available on the internet, there's just no excuse IMHO. :)

    Good advice Rayjay.

Have you heard anything about peka's ponies? I've been waiting for her to get some Erectus back on the site but nothing ever changes and she isn't answering emails.

Kind of stinks that Doni sold off all of her ponies as well.

Beth has an excellent reputation but I don't understand her not replying as she is constantly on the org and often on RC.
Why not shoot her a PM from the org and see how she responds.
Of course, you can always check out the main source, seahorsesource.com.

LOL. Went back to Beths site for the first time in a week and it says the Erectus will be ready in Oct.

Great write up. reefmonkey-if you want erectus now, Seahorse Source is fantastic and I know has available erectus. I kept them for about 2 years and I loved them. I miss my seahorse tank...

Why did you stop keeping seahorses?

I know they are the very best in the biz but I can't afford the extra 20 each shs charges.

I keep pics I took of the shs ponies at MACNA2010 on a digital frame. I've only heard good things about pekas and seahorsecorral so I figured I'd save a bit.
