    When adding new sand should you mix with old sand or just pour new sand on top.

    i wouldn't mix up a established sand bed, it will release a bunch of nutrients trapped in the bed and may kill beneficial bacteria. depending upon the age of you tank you could actually crash it by disturbing a large portion of your sand bed

    well my tank has been running for 2yrs past year reef. still learning as I go. I'm moving the tank add though it would would be a good time to add sand.

    if you moving it , hence tanking it completely down. its ok to disturb the sand, what you want to avoid is releasing the stored nutrients in to the tank. so when you move it i would give the sand a swirl around in a bucket of saltwater. do this a couple times tell the water no longer turns brown.
