is it normal for salinity to drop due to evaporation? ever since i started it was like this. ive read in posts NOT to add saltwater for top offs because salt stays in the tank and not with evaporated water. evaporation lately is quite fast, and i top off daily about 1 liter just to keep the return pump submerged. now salinity has dropped from 1.026-1.024 SG. should i add saltwater with about 1.030 to balance out the drop?

salinity shouldn't drop from evaporation..just the water evaporates and the salt is left behind..so really your salinity should go up (very slightly)..you need to find out how the salt is being removed from your system..have you been emptying your skimmer a lot? there is still salt in your skimmate so over time this could lower it..but yes just add some saltier saltwater to balance it out

you have a waterleak somewhere. salinity will always go up due to evaporation. yes mix in fresh saltwater to bring your level back to normal range, but find that leak. could also be salt creep, are you running an airstone in your display?

My vote goes to salt creap, I have never added any salt to my top off water.
You should see salt forming in clumps somewhere. thats your problem.

Sounding like a broken record but I'd focus on saltcreep. Do you have glass covers on your tank. I used to get a ton of salt creep there.

what are you testing salinity with? if not a good refractor I think I would start there.

what are you checking it with (hope calibrated refractometer) and dont forget temp plays a role lower temp shows lower salt level.
