Unfortunately when I recently setup a sump for my system there was a spike in nitrite and even a small amount of ammonia. I ended up killing my beloved mandarin goby (who was fat and otherwise healthy) and now my starry blenny is not looking so hot. My parameters are stabilized, so the worst is over for him, but I fear that permanent damage is already done. His eyes are glossed over, his overall coloration has become lighter, and worst of all he doesn't seem to be eating. On the positive side, he has come out of the hiding place he was in for the entirety of the ordeal and is now swimming around in a somewhat normal fashion.

I don't want to continue to let this creature suffer but at the same time if he has a chance at life then I owe him that too. What do you think I should do? Give it another day? It's been 1 day since the nitrite and ammonia dropped to zero and about 3 days since the spikes first began.

I wasn't sure where to post this issue but since poor water chemistry is the cause I figured it was a safe bet. Any input is appreciated as always.

It is a dry heat, yeah right !
I think you should give him the chance, and let nature takes it course.

    Sorry for the other loss.

If you do decide to euthanize the fish I have a good link on how to do so humanely.

+1 on the others who believe you should give it every chance to get better

I have seen fish with the symptons described, milky white eyes
that have improved within a few days of the water quality issue being resolved

Well I woke up this morning and of course the blenny was dead.

I know things like this happen but it really has me questioning whether or not I deserve to go get another blenny. My water parameters are good now, but I just feel so guilty.

    Anyway, thanks for your replies.

Doratus, I know you feel bad, however this is something that is part of keeping fish. Things like this happen to the best of us in this hobby. You can get another blenny. This is just another thing to keep in your journal of lessons learned.
