I have a 29g biocube right now and would like to upgrade in the near future. 75g is a pretty common tank IMO and I see them go for cheap on craigslist all the time. But i want the right equipment and dont want to spend thousands of dollars at the same time. I would look for most stuff on craigslist really. But lighting is really the big problem, what would be cheaper? LED or halide?

i just upgraded to solana 34, but lighting was huge problem and had no money for me, thats why i just decided to upgrade to what my 150 mh could support for now. But...you can get like 4 par 30 boostled lamps for cheap way YouTube - 75g reef tank w/4 par30's week 1

Thats the cheapest LED way I can think of, they cost $70 each so x 4 = $280, if you buy 3 you can get 5% discount by contacting them and letting them know ahead of time before your doing bulk buy, if you are buying 5 you can get 10% discount. But notice this person only has softies, so probably means.. 4 is not enough to give it enough par for sps or clams, might have to contact boostled if you were interested in going par bulbs

or you can just buy 5 LED or more for your tank, if you don't have enough, you can find someone locally who's willing to buy some of his own making 5 or more to get 10% discount.

Or you can buy those $340-$400+ LED fixture, but I think you will need 2 of them unless its a cube, then if its a cube I think 1 can support it depending on its power and light spread, but if its rectangle you might need 2, most likely 2, but thats what I think, since I never owned 75 gallon or LED fixture.

Or you can just look for cheap used Metal halides from craigslist

I sent you a PM recently about my 84 gallon...equipped and ready to move shortly. Lots of LR, a few corals, and a few fish. PM me for the new price (reduced). Also has LED lighting.

Its not clear whether you mean to try to buy new or used and while you hint in one direction, just for fun, I'll give you the breakdown on my 60 gallon rimless which should be quite similar.

Tank and stand, reef ready. $600.
    Return Pump. $80.
    Octopus Skimmer. $200.
    Vortech MP40. $400.
    Koralia 1400. $40.
    Reefkeeper Lite. $115.
Phosban reactor with EcoBak and a MJ1200. $110.
    JBJ ATO. $80.
2x AI Sol White LED Lights. $1200. (Substitute a more reasonably priced MH or T5 kit if price is an issue, if you an afford em though, I love em).

    Total Price. $2825.

Add tax and misc. and you should get to $3000 - $3200 range.

Used is definitely a lot cheaper.

I was in no hurry to buy a 75g tank, and so I waited for a good deal on craigslist. After several months I found one for $100 (tank, stand, canopy, canister filter, skimmer, salt, and various other odds and ends) and pulled the trigger. Sold my 55g for $100 (tank and stand) on craigslist, so it cost me nothing to upgrade from a 55 to a 75. I'll end up selling the canister filter and skimmer in the future (won't use a canister filter as I have a sump and I already have an AquaC Remora Pro skimmer that I will use), so I will have been paid to upgrade.

Keep shopping craigslist until you find a deal you just can't say no to. Then buy buy buy!

well I have to comment on this so I will ;D I have started a build on a 75 and can say its not the cheepest but is cheeper used. I got my tank off craigslist for $75.00 and built the stand and canopy for aroung $230.00
(had no clue what i was doing and it looks great ;D) sany ways I also am doing the boost leds and was told by the manufacture for LPS SPS and Softies 8 bulbs waould sufice but im doing 10 to get more white out of the bulb. I also have gotten the sump for free and the skimmer was only 20 dollars but Im upgrading the skimmer shortly so its about $200.00 and Im sure I could give you a price on my old skimmer or canister filter but in all I would say that about $1000.00 would have you started and running but that a very low number.
