I'm a dialysis patient, so I watch my diet and think about health/diet more than anyone I know. I mean I get to see what happens to people if they mess up, stroke and hart attack are no joke!! When filtering things (just like filtering my blood) certain things come out first and other thing latter due to size and other factors, like phosphorus and potassium are hard to take out of my blood because they are so big that we would end up taking protein out too.Potassium is very important to normal people for hydration (that's why you see it in Gatorade), but not for me because I already have to much of it most of the time. So what I want to know is what is left in that last 7-10 ppm.

The DI usually caches, nitrates, phosphates, and silicates, among other stuff, as far as I know. AZDesertRat could explain exactly what the RO is least efficient at catching in far greater detail than I could, though.

I am not sure that I agree with all this "dont drink RODI water" hype.

If you are relying on tapwater as your sole source of essential minerals and flouride - that is a bigger problem unto itself than drinking the clean water in the first place.

I would say that the manufacturers of RODI equipment are just covering their behinds when they tell you not to drink the water. It just makes it so that they are less liable for when people do not know how to use a filter properly, or do not maintain it, and drink contaminated water and get sick or die.

It's the actual hydrogen hydroxide in "water" that hydrates us. While the minerals in water (certain minerals in certain concentrations) are not bad for you, it's the actual water itself that is most important. The essential minerals should come from diet or supplements - not your tap.

But this is just my $0.02.

I am hoping AZDesertRat will step in and set the story straight . . . .

If you're relying of getting any amount of flouride from anything, you've got bigger problems haha.

I do hope AZDR shows up, though. He knows this stuff much better, and could give a pretty detailed breakdown of what gets caught by the RO and what gets caught by DI.

I meant that in the "you shouldn't really be trying to get flouride anyway, since you don't really need it" sense.

This is the line of thinking I agree with, but I've learned that I should probably give the hype a chance because I seem to be wrong more and more these days lol.

You could not possibly drink enough RO/DI to do yourself harm, you woulddrown internally meaning your cells would drown, before you would see any other effects. We receive such a misiniscule amount of minerals from water its not necessary they be in the water, we get it from our food and even the air we breathe.
The main reason we don't drink RO/DI is it has a blah, bland taste and does not refresh the palate.

Many health nuts have been trying to prove drinking RO or RO/DI is bad for years but its just not possible to live on water alone and even one potato chip contains more minerals than many gallons of water so eating negates the tests.

I wouldn't worry about it myself. I have only heard of one person who bceame sick drinking RO/DI and he was a marathon runner who was not eating right and drank RO/DI by the gallons instead of replenishing needed electrolytes with things like sports drinks. Thats an extreme case and not at all common.

you can drink it, I have drink it. I wouldn't rely on it to rehydrate yourself after exercise or drink it as your sole liquid.

since its pure water, it would remove more vitamins minerals from your body as it passed though. If this adds anything to the discussion in my experience fresh water fish and inverts seem extremely weakened when that is used instead of tap water.
