There are any factors involved. However algae feeds on phosphates and other impurities in water. If your tap water is high in these impurities you will be adding algae food to your tank. These impurities can be removed by RO/DI filtration. If you have high levels of these in your tap water it will measure high for TDS .

This argument could go on and on.. If tap is working for ya then that's fine. I've always used RO so I'm not sure what my tank would be like if I used tap.
To be on the safe side I think it's best to err on the side of caution.

BEST WAY TO PUT IT.... would you not wear a condom if the other person has an STD??? ask yourself that question and please protect your reef tank ;)

lol did make me laugh, but if your TDS is fine, why waste the money on an ro, ive used only tap for years and ive never had a problem and i know many others who only use tap also with no problems. I think sometimes people make this hobby alot harder then it really is.

Thought it would be good for a laugh.

truly OP it is not something to be practiced.... 90% of peoples tap water is not reef compatible.... FISH ONLY tanks is a different situation. If your tap water is "clean" enough to work for a reef, than consider yourself one of the lucky few.
