    Good Morning All,

I will be starting-up my 90g. within the next few weeks. All equipment ie., Tank, Refugium, Protein Skimmer, Lighting etc., on board. I will be purchasing the LR and sand next. This morning I decided to do a test run on my RO/DI unit. Everything seems to be operating as it should. RO water seems to be flowing at the normal rate compared to the rate of the waste water. However, the DI canister is only about 1/8 full while operating. Is this normal? Any and all info/advise is appreciated.

    Thanks,
    john1948:confused:

Mine stays full...sounds like an airlock....somehow you need to flush it. I can by removing a little plastic insert in the output tube and letting water run until all filter chambers are full..

I hope that meakes sense LOL

Don't know which unit you have, but with mine I'm able to unclip the DI canisters. If you're able to do this, try standing them up with the water running and see if the air won't purge itself out.

On another note, it may be fine as it is for now(do you have a TDS meter to tell?) but my concern would be that all of the DI resin wouldn't be getting used equally and you'll probably end up wasting a lot of good resin at change out time...

Thanks for the response PierceEye. I have a "5 Stage Plus" unit from Bulk Reef Supply. I don't see a little plastic insert in my output tube but I do have a membrane flush kit attached to the unit. I used this flush unit before making the RO water as suggested my BRS. I'll try calling BRS for help on Monday. Also, are all of the canisters supposed to emty after use?
    Thanks,

Thank you Captscott, I do have a TDS meter on my unit. Exactly what would I be looking at for it to tell me? My DI canister is separate from the other canisters. When you say stand it up, what do you mean? Hold it above the others while operating? This is my first time using the unit please forgive my ignorance.

Also......I just noticed that the pressure valve on my unit reads a constant 43-45 psi. Should this be higher? Does anyone think this (pressure reading) could be the reason the DI canister is not filling up during the operation? Any suggestions?

    Thanks,

Come on people, I know someone out there has a RO/DI unit from BRS. Has anyone experienced this problem (DI canister not filling up during operation)? Or answer the question about psi? Please, anyone.

    Thanks,

That is perfectly normal. If you raise or lower the line coming from the DI you will see the level in the canister go up and down. No big deal. The reason is the DI cartridge is a bottom up flow design so the water is travelling up the inside of the cartridge where you cannot see it.

Try going in sequence. Take off all the canisters expect for the first one, start your water, when it primes up and is filled, add the next one, when its full add the next one, and so on...
And then let it run for a few hours....
