You could also use a saddle valve for the water supply.

and one of these for the drain

and HD sells both........most of the time.

Thanks. I could use those, but I'm looking for something less permanent because I live with my parents...and I'll eventually move out and take the RO/DI with me.

HD does sell a Shut-of-valve with a two-way split, you just gotta look for it.

Thanks Luna. I will look for it. Planning to go by there on Saturday.

You can just put putty in the drain pipe when you move or just replace it, both are cheap and easy to do.

Doing it the way it is in Justonemore and JBLs photos works out well with the flexible stainless hose replacing the rigid copper tubing. Remove the copper, install a tee with one side feeding the RO and the others the sink, screw on the braided stainless and 1/4" RO feed and you are done. When you go to remove it one day you can either shut off a simple ball valve and disconnect it like JBL shows or remove the tee and reconnect the braided stainless since it will have some slack in it.

This is what I used, it's perfect. It has a valve that redirects water to the RO unit or shut off the RO unit, it still allows the faucet to run even when it's feeding the RO unit and is completely removeable. Similar to some pics before but slightly different. Cheap too.

    JustOneMore23,

Based on the photos you have provided it looks like you are pretty close to having the parts you need. Take the part that you got at Lowes and compare it to the part that is installed under the sink.

Do the large ends match in size? If they do you have a 5/8" OD copper supply riser (OK technically it is not a riser since you are in the basement, but I degress ...)

Now how about the end going towards the faucet. It looks to me like 3/8" OD copper. Does it match the second smallest end on your Lowes part?

If you can provide a photo of the Lowes part side-by-side with the existing part.

Also, what type of fittings were provided with the RO/DI unit that can be used for supply. Perhaps a 1/4" male to quick connect?

If you can provide a photo of the RO/DI supplied fittings.

Ok, now for some assumptions that we can clear up in a bit:

Assuming that the 5/8" inlet and 3/8" to the sink are correct, and assuming that you have a 1/4" male fitting for the RO/DI inlet, here is what you will need:

    1) Take the angle-stop that you got from Lowes and exchange it for a 5/8" OD compression inlet x 3/8" OD compression out x 3/8" compression out. Basically the same part but with 3/8" instead of the 1/4".

    2) Get a 3/8" OD compression to 1/4" female adapter.

    3) Get a small length, about 2", of 3/8" OD copper tubing.

Another option is to get the part that Screwtape just showed you. However installing this will require that you shorten the copper line going to the sink. In all honesty this is the way I would go, but it depends on how comfortable you feel about cutting the copper line going to the sink. As a note the solution I have provided previously will require shutting off the entire water supply to the house. Gotta love plumbing! ;D

PS sorry my post is a little rambling but darnit it is Friday!

Thanks for the replies and the link! I will take a picture this evening of the part I got at Lowe's and compare side by side.

I planned on going to HD tomorrow, so I can get the parts you mentioned, if everything matches up to the dimensions that we are assuming (and look similar to my Lowe's part).

I don't feel that comfortable cutting the copper, so if I can do it the way you described, that is what I'd prefer.

I knew that I'd have to shut the water off to the house and have already looked into how to do that (I repeat, I'm not a plumber...haha). I'll post the pics later of the part and cold water supply.

Bad pics of the part from Lowes and my plumbing:

And a part I found that came with the ro/di filter. Its 3/8" with the place for the tubing to hook into. I think it might work, if the copper will somehome screw on (well, the piece on the copper...).

I talked it over with my mom and she said we could replace the copper input with some steel braided tube. Maybe that ^ or my piece from Lowes would work then?

My concerns with the part from Lowes, should it go onto the copper in place of the valve I already have, is that the copper input would have to go into one end of that piece and its not bendable. Maybe the braided stuff would help.

I'm not sure. I'm gonna try the part I found (its plastic) and see, unless someone tells me otherwise! If it doesn't work, I'll go to HD tomorrow and see what they have.
