I'm posting this from another thread for just one reason that concerns me about spectrapure:

I found this post very useful for me at least. I bolded the area I was talking about.

AZ, I knew you would chime in lol. I appreciate it. I was wondering about that actually and it my hesitant about buying a spectrapure system. Now everything makes since. I still like the idea of the purelyH2O system with the shut off valve for the tank. ;D

I would go with the Spectrapure with its more efficient filters, RO membrane and DI resin, then add a drinking water kit. PurelyH2o I believe has a good price on the add on drinking water kit at like $59.

Look at everything about a RO/DI system start to finish and get the best components you can for your money. Lower micron sediment filters do a better job of protecting the carbon block, better carbon blocks last longer and do a better job of protecting the RO membrane. A treated and tested RO membrane will produce lower TDS than a dry off the shelf untreated or untested RO membrane maning your DI resin will work better an last longer. All of these things add up to a cost savings to the end user as they last longer and work better requiring less replacement at lower overall cost. Its a complete system, not just individual pieces.

I got the Spectrapure MPDI system was wondering if I can use the bulkreefsupply 4 stage replacement filter. The price seems so much better than getting the spectrapure ones.

The price is different because the quality is different.
Spectrapure has spent years testing their filters and only carry the very best.
The reason it is more is it is a 0.5 micron absolute rated sediment filter, a 0.5 micron near absolute rated 20,000 gallon carbon block and their custom blended, reef specific SilicaBuster DI resin guaranteed to outperform and outlast any other resin on the market. At $52 for the set thats not bad at all or you can buy the resin in a bulk pkg and save a little more but never buy more resin than you can use in 6 months time. My SilicaBuster cartridge lasts much longer than that so I don't buy a replacement until I start to see anything other than 0 TDS.

Compare that to a 5.0 micron nominal rated sediment filter which allows particulates and colloidal material through to foul of plug the billions of tiny microscopic pores in the carbon block, a similar carbon block but premixed, off the shelf non reef specific DI resin.

There really is a difference and thats why Spectrapure systems outperform others and last much longer. Its not at all unheard of to find a Spectrapure RO membrane that is 10 years old and still going strong. Ask Randy Holmes Farley, he reported 10 years on one not long ago. Plus if you use lower quality replacements, you void the warranty? Why buy a Cadillac and use Yugo replacement parts?

I find it interesting. We all have this urge to find the best cheapest product we can. But in reality of the RO/DI world there seems to be one company that sticks out. AZDesertRat has been amazing enough to take his 20+ years of experience in water management and through his testing of different units has Found the most reliable, efficient and effective system at a very competitive price. Yet we all still question his choice, and try to find other units that are obviously advertised to be as good. We all know the companies number one goal is to move their product, and it is up to us to review and give honest feedback about the products we buy and use. I have yet to see another person other than Azdesertrat who has knowledge about water management and quality ever recommend a different company. I have not yet. I have heard many sponsors and manufacturers compare how their product is as effective. But not too many people in that area of expertise recommending a different unit. I have talked to some people who used AquaFx before and found it to be good at first but was having to replace filters about every 4-5 months. So it ended up being more expensive.

I use Spectrapure, And have had zero tds for over a year and a half with only 1 filter change at 9 months. Best purchase i ever made, my reef also agrees.

I bougt a spectrapure 2 weeks ago. Super easy to use and couldn't be happier. I haven't tested it exactly, but the 90 gallon unit fills up my 60 gallon holding tank in about half a day. Seems to work as advertised

I see your point, but at the same time it is human nature to question everything. That is why technology advances for one. ;D
