Hi all. I have been out of the hobby for 6 long years. I am thinking about getting back in. I was looking through what equipment I still had and I found out that I still have an RO/DI unit that is still connected to my house's water system. All of the chambers still had water in them and were full. I also had a TDS dual inline meter on the RO/DI unit. So, I decided to see if everything still works. I turned it on for 2 hours and the "IN" TDS reading was at 3 and the "OUT" TDS reading is at zero. Water flows as it should.

Now my question! Is it safe/ok to use the RO/DI unit as is or should I go ahead and replace all of the filters? I had the unit for only a couple of months before I got out of the hobby, if that means anything. Thanks for your help in advance!

I would personally replace all filters, including the membrane, for fear of what is growing in the filters, housings, tubing, etc. I would clean each filter housing in bleach as well, and then run the system for quite some time with no filters in it to a drain to clean out the tubing.

Hopefully AZDesertRat will chime in with his thoughts as well.

Replace it, its not worth the risk of virus or bacteria growth inside the membrane and filters.

Long term storage recommendations are to remove the membrane while it is fresh and clean, place it in a zip loc or seal a meal vacuum sealer bag with some RO/DI and store it in the back of the frig so it stays cool and damp and out of direct lighting then flush it well upon reinstallation. The DI has a shelf life even when properly stored so you would toss it after about 6 months.
