Hello all. I have a few 2.5 gal containers that used to contain laundry detergent. There red plastic (Tide brand IIRC). I'd like to use them to hold spare ro/di water for me. I was wondering if rinsing them out liek crazy w/ hot water a few times, then vinegar and water. Follow this up with baking soda and water. Rinse and repeat a couple times.

Do you think this would make it safe enough to remove any traces of junk in the containers? I did try this on one of them, and tasted the ro/di water which seemed ok. There is a faint smell of the perfume tho, this I know may never leave.

    Advice?

    Thx :)

Serotonin, if there is still the scent of perfume then they are not clean enough and will leach out toxins into the contained water. Your best bet is to get a 2.5 gal water jug from your local supermarket and use that if anything.

Time for a stronger acid >:) muahaha

EDIT: In reality, it's a lot easier to spend even 5$ on a clean container than to risk ruining my reef, that's for certain!

I'm more curious of anyone has tried this method, despite the stench that is left behind and gone ahead anyways.

I use empty orange juice containers. I wouldn't use empty soap containers :)

I actually use my wife's litter containers. About 20 of them
I just rince them out with vinegar a few times. Gave them a scrub and used them with no issues. I even kept my fish in them for 8 hrs during the move a month ago.

If you think about it the buckets are the LEAST expensive part of your reef setup- you could wash them but trust me it's not worth it. Did I ever tell you guys what happened to my tank after my kids washed thier mom's car with one of my tank buckets (and of course forgot to tell me) , they didn't smell like soap to me so how would I know what was going to happen?- the words die and off come to mind-
