i have a 37 gallon DT, in which i have a 20 gal high that i am making into a sump/fuge(20 high only because it is what will fit under my stand).

i am going with an Eshopps overflow and i am trying to determine which PF-???? and return pump (brand and flow) to go with for a steady cycle. i am also going to have a flow switch inline of my return if that makes a differance in a return pump choice.

anyone experiance this setup up or know enough about waterflow to give me an idea of what i should buy.

    thanks in advance :)

Buy a Eheim pump, they are the best.

    Eheim model 1048 is rated @ 158GPH 10W
Exremely low power consumption and heat and dead silent.

Eheim pumps have superior quality ; ceramic shaft, ceramic and carbon bearing.
These pumps are suitable for use in or out of fresh or salt water. T
hese pumps are nearly silent and have low energy consumption.

    Eheim 1048 Universal Pump:

    •Pump Output: 158 gph
    •Delivery Head: 4`11"
    •Power Consumption: 10 W (120V/60Hz)
    •Hose Connection (Suction Side): 1/2"
    •Hose Connection (Pressure Side): 1/2"
    •Dimensions: 5.8" x 3.0" x 4.7"
    •Weight: 2.0 lbs

The 1048 is too small but Eheims are good pumps. The 1048 only delivers 158 GPH at 0' head and only pumps up 4'11" high so will be delivering almost nothing with the common 4 foot lift from a sump to display tank.

I would look at a bigger Eheim, 1050 or 1060, or an Ocean Runner 2500 which should get you right at 300 GPH at 4-5' head and in the 200 GPH range if you are installing a SQWD current switching device. Just right for your sump and tank size if you ask me.

Don't forget the price tag on those puupies.

I will be upgrading from a not so quiet one 2200 to a Tunze Silence.

    Eheim link:
    Eheim Universal "Hobby" Pump

You will probably want the eheim 1260 and that is 150$

As compaired to the Tunze Recirculation Pump/Powerhead Silence 1073.020 at 85$.
    Tunze Recirculation Pump/Powerhead Silence

I don't recommend quiet ones at all. It is loud and not reliable.

honestly the noise isnt an issue, it is going to be behind a door under my stand, not to mention my skimmer already has a nice humm to it anyway.

well thanks alot for the info guys :)

one more question will the least flow overflow be suffiecent for any of these pumps??

How do they rate the flow of their overflow boxes? If the PF-xxx means gallons per hour then you probably need the PF-800. Its good to slightly oversize without going too big and having problems with low velocity and losing siphon.

With many lower end pumps its not just a noise issue. Many are very inefficient electrically so create massive amounts of heat which can be a problem in a small system not to mention the higher electrical bills when it is running 24/7/365. You also run into pumps that have restart problems either in a power outage or when you shut it off for maintenance or feeding, personally I have found Quiet Ones fit in all these catagories having had two literally burn up and having to constantly take them apart to clean the impeller. Mags fit in thefirst three, noise, heat and higher than normal watts consumed per gallons pumped. I have had both a Via Aqua and a Rio Hyperflow fail due to swelled impeller magnets even though near new and numerous others I just didn't like due to one thing or another.

A couple pumps I have not yet tried but intend to are the new MaxiJet Utility pumps and Octopus pumps which appear to be the same as a Ocean Runner but less expensive. Heard good things about both.

Eheims are awesome. I have a 1262 and am very happy with it. That one is probably too big for you though.
