Well, the Pet Despot near my home is selling corals and anemones now. They have the saddest looking button polyps I have ever seen. My first reaction is to buy some and try to save them, but 1) I have a sick clam 2) I don't know if I could, and 3) I don't want to encourage them to carry any marine livestock. Any thoughts on this? Save a frag (and spend $30- overpriced) or write a complaint to the manager?

As much as I would love to tell you to save them, my 2nd response is not to encourage they're business. Luna

instead of writing the manager, talk to the GM and bring him/her to the polyps and tell them you know a little about saltwater aquariums and they don't look very healthy and that you would love to buy from them if they actually knew what they were doing or hired someone who knows about them. something like that.....hey you might end up with a part time job from it and some free frags????

I wouldn't buy them because if they die, your out the money and would have supported their store in the salt water hobby. I kind of agree with cuttingras, I would just let them know that you are familiar with this area and that their livestock is not healthy, see what they say.

Petco's first and only and last concern is their bottom line , No body that would ever go to work there can not change a single thing period not matter what they know or not . So buying them to save them they could care less the made the sale and it was you that spent the money to strengthen their bottom line at the end of the month. Sometimes you have to cut the foot off to save the leg . They loose money they will stop and thats the only way they will stop. I think you'd be doing the corals a favor to just let them all die on petcos dime. Its not like its a rare coral and why waste your money to encourage them to sell or bring in more .

I bought a yellow tang at Petco that had some nasty parisites on it. I knew my tank wasnt large enough for a tang, but I knew it would die if it stayed there. I asked for a discount and got 10 percent off, what a joke. Part of me is happy because I saved the fish but part of me knows that buying the fish insured that they would get more sick fish. What do you do?????? At least this fish is healthy and alive right?

I saw an anemone in a petco once, took all I could do not to buy it and take it to someone I knew who would take care of it. It was so sad looking too.

I will say however, that there is another Petco further away from me that is pretty particular about the livestock they buy and how they take care of it (department manager is a hobbyist). She'll even find you a critter and have it shipped directly to your house so it doesn't go in her tanks first.

You're lucky. The first of my 2 LFS doesn't carry any marine livestock, and the other's are so sad looking it makes me want to cry . I have to buy online, unless I want to travel an hour and a half and hope that that store has quality specimens.

Call before you drive! I got a toadstool (I hope this is it) from a LFS that was a 45 minute drive. I called them and got the guy to text me a picture of it with it's polyps extended and with everything closed up. I wanted to see every inch of the thing and I probably irritated the heck out of him. I decided I wanted it (after discussing it with Omard), and sent my hubby after it. It was a $10 frag and is doing very well in q/t. I'm so stoked to watch it grow (can you tell). It's literally an inch across the top.
