I was brain storming the other night how I could incorporate cheato into my system since i dont have a fuge or sump. i have 2 Rena XP1s laying around and got to thinking maybe i could cut one of the sides out and replace it with clear acrylic so i could get light to the cheato. i'd have to rig something up with the baskets so the light will get to the cheato but still keep the cheato out of the impeller.

what do you think? any ideas?

I wouldn't do that. You'd need to cut the side, and use Weld-On or similar to seal it. It's kind of hard to do without practice and ALL the right tools.

Much cheaper than to buy all the stuff for doing acrylic/plastic work would be to use a new HOB Aquaclear, TBH.

I always thought it would be cool to try a trickle fuge, have cheato morpha in a trickle filter and have water fall over it with lights on the sides

The biggest problem I see is that acrylic and other plastics aren't easy to work with, especially without any prior experience. You have a preexisting canister filter, which means you have only 1 chance to get it right. I wouldn't take that chance, TBH.
