I've always read that if you do a regular waterchange of at least 10% you don't have to worry about dosing supplements and that's it's the safest way to maintain trace element levels. So that's what I do..I change 15% of my total system volume every Sunday and my pH, Alk, calc, and mag stay at constant levels.
I'm just curious how you do it. Feel free to explain why;D

Well in heavy mineral required systems (Mature SPS tanks), it is necessary to supplement or you'd be changing water every day. SPS tanks can go through calcium like nothing.

I voted for dosing, but agree slocal....there should be an option for both water changes and dosing. I do both, regular water changes weekly to replace trace elements, but manual dosing to replace calcium and magnesium. I have no desire to do water changes daily.

I have a low stocked tank at the moment so I rely mainly on my water changes but I dose a little from time to time.

    both for me at present
when my tank was full off soft corals and LPS , water changes kept the numbers where I wanted them
shifting the tank towards SPS has seen a slight drop over the course of a few weeks on the 3 calc , alk and mag ( with alk being the 1st of the 3 to require supplementing IME)

Yes I don't believe these are "perform one or the other" But both are needed. Most commercial salts do not contain enough CA, ALK or Mag for my liking. Despite water changes I also have to dose. I also have to buffer my water change water.
As your corals grow and demand more you need to increase the dosage
