IMHO the odds of it happening again are high
these fish have become territorial and ganged up in order to preserve that territory - thats a worse case scenario for certain types of new introductions IME
I have had this situation once or twice , fish that dont actually seem to achnowledge the existance of each other most of the time , teaming up to harrass a newcomer

That is kind of what I was thinking. I was looking at getting 1 more fish for the tank but I am kind of worried what ever I would get at this point would suffer the same fate.

    This is what I wanted. http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/prod_display.cfm?c=15 46 380&pcatid=380

I think the problem with the butterfly was that the body shape was kind of similar to the tangs, and the butterfly was so passive and peaceful. If you get something with a different body shape and feistier personality, it would probably be okay.

    Sorry about your loss :(

    +1 on KcBradd

that fish looks like it could take care of itself - its those scapels that Tangs have that are the problem IME, without the blades, my money would be on the Tusk fish beating the tag team.

I have wanted a tusk for the last 2 yrs. I asked my LFS if they could get me one around 2" so he can grow. they are looking for me now. They have one in their 220 display that they have had for about 6 yrs. He is probably about 8". beautiful fish IMPO.

Sorry for your loss, I agree the tusk should be able to take care of itself.
