So I'm thinking of building a refug for under my 55 gallon and I was wonder what things I would need. I have a 10 or 20 gal tank to use. I know id need tubing to pull the water in and get it out and some acrylic pieces for dividers, but I'm really new and don't know exactly what I'd need. Tips on a pump, shut-offs, acrylic dimensions, etc would help out immensly!

 

You don't need much to build a fuge, but it sounds like you are wanting to put the fuge in a sump. So you need an overflow box for the main tank, the container for the sump/fuge, and I would suggest going as large as you can, and a return pump.
