I had unplugged my reef octopus hob skimmer I have on my 55 gal last night, cleaned out the poop container and turned it back on. It was filling up like crazy after that. It was almost clear water being collected. It has never done that before. So I adjusted it about an inch up so it wouldn't fill as fast. Is this a normal function after a restart?

    haha

I am having the same problem. I am setting up a 90 gallon tank and my Octopus Extreme 160 is filling up with water and overflowing out of the collection cup. The skimmer should be broken in, it's about a year old, and I've raised it so the water level is only a few inches above the motor.

I looked at some old threads and people said this happened when they added stuff like dechlorinator to the water. How does that make this happen? And the water I'm skimming is disgusting since the sand I put in the tank had a bunch of die off. I figured that would kick start the cycle but is it too gross? My house smells like rotten eggs.

Some De-chlorinators have a protective Aloe to help promote a fishes slime coat to ward off illness This will cause the skimmer to froth over like crazy leaving a BARELY tea stained liquid in the collection cup. It's best if you add the De-chlorinator and let it set for a few hours before turning on the skimmer giving it time to work it's magic and adhere to things or be absorbed if it continues to happen try one with out a slime coat.

Has chlorine intoduced into the system some how? How can this happen? also if you add a de-chlorinator to the water, would that harm anything else?

If you use a tap water conditioner you (which you shouldnt be) its very are on everything in your tank. Its much better for your tank and it will make algae control much easier if you use RO/Di water :)

I do use RO/DI water, however could this be telling me I have to change my filters in my unit?
