depends on a number of things. Mainly, the temp in your house.

If the temperature in your house goes above 79-80, and you can't keep it maintained via air conditioning, then yes- a chiller would be a wise purchase.
If the ambient temperature your aquarium room in your house is 79~ish, take into account for a 1-2 degree temperature increase with your aquarium pumps, etc, that naturally produce heat just by functioning, and your already looking at a 80-81 degree temperature... the max that you'd likely want your aquarium to sit at.

Whenever I see my Aquarium temperature hit 81, I turn on the AC in my house so I can keep dropping it. This route enables my house to stay relatively cool, and keep my tank's temperature at a safe level. Sure beats spending a couple hundo' on a chiller!

Agreed totally with comments by Daniel and Phayes

just wanted to add, it depends where your located and the seasonal temp highs
where I am, to run the house AC 24/7 for up to 9 months of the year would cost more than the chiller and electricity for said chiller combined

but of your in an area that experiences a few weeks, couple of months of so of seasonal high temps, then house AC means everyone is a winner

I live in FL and have a RSM250... do not use a chiller but have a sump with a fan over it, which helps with the cooling. Keep in mind that the skimmer pump alone raises the temp by 2 degrees.

I have a RSM 130 and tried as much as possible not to get the chiller. Well it arrived today. In Florida it is hard not to get one. With all the pumps chugging away and the Florida heat I had no choice. It was well worth it to get right away while the wife was still OK with my spending. do it right the first time.

I have a RedSea Max 250, it’s been wet for about 1 month. I have been carefully monitoring tank temp as that was an initial concern of mine, also. (check out my blog and album) The Max has a great fan system to remove heat from the 6 florescent bulbs, both air intake and exhaust. They also provide 2 fans for direct cooling to the tank, lots of heat generated by the 3 pumps. I have found these fans provide a rock solid 2 degrees of room temp. I live in the Outer banks of NC, we have plenty of summer heat, but the Max has handled it. I thought about adding a chiller, but have decided no. I do not want a lab experiment and the Max provides that perfectly.
