I drill my 40b for the first time with a hole for a 1/2" bulkhead. I don't like where it is and was wondering if it would be a bad idea to just drill for my 1" bulkhead right over it. Opinions please.

Do you mean just above the hole currently in the tank? I would be careful. I cant remember the formula off the top of my head but there is a distance you must stay (between holes) for specified thickness of glass and aquarium size.

That is going to be very risky as you have already weakened the structural integrity of the glass. ^ he means over the hole he already has.

It can be done but you need to find the formula. I have seen it here on 3reef before. This will help to determine the distance you must keep between the two holes. How are you going to fill the current hole?

if you have the right bits it may be ok, i have drilled pilot holes with a small glass bit and then widened it up with a larger before....granted this was all holes under 1/2" so i dont know, if you do it dont apply pressure and take it slow

I think Mawkney wants to drill for a 1" bulkhead in the exact same spot he accidentally drilled a 1/2" bulkhead.

I'm not sure how well it can be done. That is very risky.

Thank you. My mistake. Risky? Very. Would I? Yes. Do you have experience in drilling glass? If no...then NO YOU SHOULD NOT. If you do then proceed with extreme caution. You are going to risk the original hole (flaking) out into the new hole and cracking out further into the glass. Ive seen it before when a person first starts to drill glass then pulls out the saw and starts drilling again in a slightly different area. The two holes will merge often with catastrphic results. Slow and steady. No pressure. Let the weight of the drill do the work.

No problem :), there is a way to do it but i wouldnt be using a drill as i have drilled a running reef with lots of pressure on the glass i wouldnt attempt re-drilling a hole over a hole lol

if you have a dremel you can maybe attach a sanding head and slowly widen the hole too, it might be less stressful on the glass...correct me if im wrong just an idea
