    You could look into a cati/ani DI system if you want to waste nothing, I'm not sure about the price though. The resins are rechargeable but it takes a bit of work and I'm not really familiar with it.

    What is the reason he wants to avoid wasting the water? Is it just that he doesn't like wasting it or is it the money aspect of it?

    Also, it doesn't necessarily need to be wasted. Lots of people run the waste line to a container to water the lawn or fill up the washing machine etc. The water isn't bad, it just has higher TDS than the source tap water which isn't bad for a lot of things.
