The plants can provide historical information on the water as it leaves the plant. What they do not provide is distribution system water quality which can degrade or change, especially at greater distances from the plant and if alternative disinfection techniques are not employed, heck, even if they are really.
They also cannot guarantee Joe Contractor does not dig into a live water main or you neighbor has a backflow incident that affects your entire neighborhood.

Too many variables. I ran and supervised municipal water and wastewater systems for 37 years and have many horror stories that can be told if you are not squeamish. As I said, cheap insurance so get the best you can for your $$.

Okay so I see what you mean. You're arguing that the risk is too high to rely on a filtration system that may or may not be sufficiently effective to remove all contaminants. I'm thinking that the risk level of using a cheaper (and possibly less effective) filter is not high enough for me to worry. Based on your experience what's the worst that can happen when using crappy filters?

Membrane failure and higher cost of ownership due to more frequent changes. Better filter perform better, last longer and actually cost less over time.

Thats just the unit. The water quality is generally lower with lower quality filters meaning the DI resin has to work harder making up for what the membrane is not doing so resin life is less and final water quality much be monitore more frequently of you run the risk of bad water. Again, its just not worth the risk.
