It's all customs and regulations, has nothing to do with the physical shipping costs.

I just bought mine last week from bulk reef supply as well. I bought the 4 stage and the hand held tester. Total was around 175 bucks. It has all the attachments and was super simple to hook up. Very highly reccomended.

It looks like Spectrapure does ship to Canada but you need to contact them directly rather than use the online checkout process.

AZ why do you not recommend aquasafe Canada? I have one which I'm happy with, other than some installation pains.

The quality of the components and filters is not on par with other vendors. You get what you pay for. They are strictly ebay quality and not anything I would use for anything other than drinking and cooking.

Has anyone ever quantified the effects of a few trace elements of CaCO3, Fe, Cl, and whatever else might be present after passing through a filter of lesser quality? My point is, how much is too much when it comes to worrying about how much TDS exists in your water supply? There comes a point of diminishing returns and I don't think it's necessary to spend $300 on a system that may only be 10% better than one at 50% the cost.

If you knew exactly what the elements were it might not be so bad, but you really have no idea so better safe than sorry. Many true reef quality RO/DI systems with high quality components and filters are less than $200 complete, and a lot of those can be had for less than $150 if you shop wisely. Its not worth using low end filters or replacements for that kind of money. No self respecting RO/DI vendor will sell a reef quality system with things like no name or clone membranes, granular activated carbon or little hollow horizontal tubes they call DI filters, they are in it for the profit and don't give a hoot about your needs. Compare piece by piece and you see the differences and they cost as much as much better systems from places like Spectrapure, PurelyH2o, Buckeye Field Supply and others.

I'm still unsure of whether or not it even matters. I agree with you that if I can get a better system at the same price I would obviously go with the better one. I could also understand if we were using untreated water that you would want to be extra careful. The only real concern for me is chlorine and phosphates, most other harmful elements such as heavy metals would likely be caught by municipal filtration. Most municipalities will provide test results on post filtration water contents.
