Oh wait there's this from S. Wilson @ Orphek.

Yeah he is a zealot and he isn't doing Orphek any favours talking like that. He isn't in any way affiliated with Orphek other than being a reseller. I'll pass the word onto him to be reasonable about his comments. We (Orphek) stay out of negative marketing campaigns and I have had to talk to a few hobbyists and vendors myself about this kind of mud slinging against us. I had the pleasure of talking to Tim about his new light at Macna and I hope he does well with it. The Radion is clearly designed for a different market and it stands on its own merits. I can't stop him from saying good things about Orphek, but I certainly don't want him saying overtly negative things about other vendors.

I am glad that he is not associated with the company itself, but he has just put out many people who may have been planning on buying Orphek LEDs and has discredited anything he has written about on the topic of Orphek LEDs. Whether accurate or not, he has tarnished Orphek. Hopefully they remove him from the reseller list.

I remember noticing some questionable posts about certain products when I was actually looking into buying some and deciding against it because of them.
Its very interesting to think those posts actually may not have had anything to do with the company.

ironically this makes perfect sense from a shady company like Orphek...

when I asked to secure some orphek fixtures for Sanjay and I to test, Orphek gave empty promises of shipping fixtures but never came through in the end.
Additionally, when a superior fixture that is set to the same price point hits the market they are going to use these tactics to "undermine" any possible shifts in the market shares. -- how mature
And lastly, openly slandering Sanjay like that is unprofessional and downright uncalled for! (needless to say by a person who has no experience with testing lights, no background in physics, and no expensive spectrophotometers) -- thats just pathetic...

Also, while im on my rant, I have some serious problems with the data presented in the blog post. The PUR picture is of absorbance of chlorophyll a and b... so what!? every coral out there does not only utilize "chlorophyll a and b" they utilize a plethora of VARIABLE photosynthetic pathways that are able to adapt and shift spectrum! And also, has anyone who wants to think that they know what they are talking about when it comes to lighting ever taken a look at a real spectral irradiance graph of our sun (natural sunlight!!?) http://www.laserfocusworld.com/content/dam/lfw/print-articles/2011/09/1109LFW01f2.jpg
Astronomy 001: our sun is 5800K so therefore [λ max = (0.29 cm K) / 5800 K = 5 x 10-5 cm = 500 nm] which means that its average wavelength is actually green-yellow. Now looking back at the graph supplied earlier, this is obvious as the area is pretty large on both sides of the 500nm mark. But look at the two most noticeable visible light peaks! 450nm (blue) and 750nm (red)... now since life has been adapting around this spectrum for the past few billion years, whats this tell you about life on earth!?
Granted due to the nature of hydrogen bonds in the water, most spectrums other than 450nm are absorbed quite quickly... but these peaks in the red spectrum are still needed because the increased intensity will allow a higher level of red wavelength to penetrate the water column. And to all the nay sayers that claim red light grows algae; NO! all wavelengths grow algae, but algae is just proficient at shifting spectrum verrry quickly so it can soak up red light. Besides, a well kept tank will not have algae issues because the phosphate will be the limiting factor in growth, not the available wavelengths!!!

And for reference above, a spectral absorbance of water plot: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/7/72/Water_absorption_spectrum.png
So yes, the red is both needed and necessary in these and ANY lights!

And lastly, until Orphek fixtures can be tested on a hobbyist level by multiple source, I will not buy their supplied data. Denying to have a fixture tested by a leading industry professional who publishes the truth does not say much about their confidence in their own products!
Now im quite sure that ecotech has had hobbyist level testing already in the works for the past few months and that an article publishing these finding will be released verrry soon... like i said, ironic huh?

Speaking of Sanjay, I am reading the article he wrote for Coral for the 9th time trying to understand all of it.

He's a drama queen that uses turmoil to sell only this time it blew up in his face. He no longer has one item on his list of wares.
No body that IMO matters in this hobby reads his blogs because he really has no clue. Ever notice that comments aren't allowed? Wonder why that is?

Keep hoping. I already talked to the owner, and he refuses to get involved in these games of shooting back and forth.

I will say that Jake has something against Orphek and did everything he could to drag them in with Michael Maddux who is not representative of the company.

That aside, Michael Maddux is completely out of his mind!

That blog is a joke, and Orphek in general is a joke. High priced unproven fixtures with their "custom" designed diodes that are manufactured where? I like how the owner told u he refuses to get involved, yet I've seen Orphek directly bash other companies on more than one forum. Personally I would rather buy a cree based light than a light built with unproven no-name diodes like an Orphek fixture. Who cares about some joke of a blog, the ecotech is going to outsell Orphek by a mile and everyone knows it.
