ok so im starting my tank more like doing the research for it now im trying to figure out what the difference is in a frag tank and a reef tank or am i being ignorant and they are both 1 in the same.

from my understanding a frag tank is a tank with coral frags that you let grow and you glue or plug them into place on your live rock

and a coral reef tank is the whole coral on your live rock.

if thats the case then wouldnt a frag tank be cheaper to start and let it grow to a reef tank

like i said this is my first tank with coral. i could just be over thinking everything. but i want everything as close to perfect if not perfect.

A frag tank is one where you let your frags that you made from your existing coral colonies heal and grow out a bit. These tend to be shallower (less light requirements), little or no rock in the tank (maybe in the sump) and not much in the way of fish. In general, just racks of frags.

A reef tank is one where you have a mini-reef --rocks, coral (little or big) growing on them, and fish.

As your reef tank matures, those little frags grow out into colonies.

A frag tank is where you let frags that you have made grow out. What you are looking to start is a reef tank. How you grow the corals is you go to a fish store and buy coral frags (really any piece of coral) which will be attached to either a frag plug or a small piece of live rock. Then you have the option of attaching the frags directly to your live rock or attaching the frag plug or small piece of rock to your live rock.

Make sure you do a decent amount of research before you go buy anything live and make sure you can take care of itandmakeit thrive. I remember reading books and online for an hour or two a day for several months before I started my first tank and so far have been very successful (knock on wood). Please ask as many questions as you can think of before you start. We are all happy to help and no question is ever stupid, believe me we have all asked them at one point in time. Good luck.

So you can start a reef tank with frags. I mean I'm in no big rush to start I got awhile befor I will have the money for it.

What is the best way go frags or just pay the money for a colony

Yes you can definitely start with frags. Every colony in my tank started as a little frag at some point. The price of corals goes up exponentially as you buy larger and larger specimens so if you have the money go for whatever you want, however you can diversify and get a lot more with little frags.
