Okay! So Hi, I'm Chance, I like small tanks.
    :D

    Here's what I would do!

Assuming the filter you have is HOB (hang on back), take all the mechanical filtration out (this is including the filter pads).

Get a very fine mesh bag, and buy a container of carbon, put the carbon in the bag, put the bag in the filter! If the Filter is big enough, you could take the lid off, and put some Chaeto in there.

(My "loaf" of Chaetomorpha in my overflow.)

Chaetomorpha acts as a good biological filter, as well as a mechanical filter if placed properly. Since you said you had 3 fish in a 10 gallon tank (not OVER stocked, but almost) The chaeto will absorb all the nutrients that the fish and etc. put out. Idk what your lighting situation is, but it doesn't take much to grow chaeto!

3 fish in a 10g?- yes, it's overstocked, even small fish.
You going to disrupt the whole 'space-time' continuum.

    Welcome to 3Reef.

You have posed excellent questions and obviously have done some research grasshopper.

I agree with most all that's been said, especially one of the last posts about just running carbon, no filter pad, and putting chaeto in there as well. And I certainly agree that you can run one if you keep it farily clean.

Need some free chaeto? come on by!

thanks for all of the replies guys! you've helped me out alot! I decided that for now, I'll just clean out the media like once a week. I am having thoughts of upgrading to a 30 gallon, so then the real fun might get started haha. thanks again for the help, this is a great forum with great posters.

Chaeto sounds like a good option too! I wish I could come by and pick some up, unfortunately I live in Cali
