What do you all use in the tank, if anything, to treat POTENTIAL bacteria/fungal/parasitic etc. issues? I.E. what do you use as a precautionary measure (besides enriched foods and garlic).

If you are treating Ich, I have found cuprimine by seachem is good(copper based )

At your lfs look for different parasitic remedies. I've even had success treating with melafix in the qt tank for an infection on one of ym puffers in the past.

+1 on garlic, put a piece of pvc in there so they can hide and keeps them less stressed.

Do you treat prior to fish showing symptoms?

I use a 5g bucket, an airstone sponge filter, a small heater, and don't use any garlic stuff. I QT all my purchases for the last 10 months or so, and haven't introduced anything (dz) since then!

    I read your other post.

For Real- my fav LFS would never have sold a fish they just got, never!
Any good lfs puts the date they got the fish in the lfs on the label of the price.
That way, you know if they just got there, a few months, etc.
    Why is impt. you ask?
I learned this from research. Most lfs use copper in verying degrees in their DT fishes. Unless of course they are keeping verts, or corals in the same tank, usually not though.

And, if the lfs has had the fish at least 2-4 weeks, shows no visable signs of dz., and they can show you it will feed/eat, then chances are the fish is in pretty good shape.
I still QT mine now ever since I violated the cardinal rules and got 4 different fish at the same time, not using the guidelines I mentioned earlier and now know, and lost 5 total fish.

For real, my bucket QT works great. Oh yea, I do put a large piece of PVC in there to so they can hide. NO cycling, etc. Use new mixed water, with some from my DT, 2.5 gallons, perfect for 1 fish at a time, they way fish should be added, 1 at a time.
I usually use PriziPro in my QT, or no meds and just some time. MOst will say QT for at least 30 days. Honestly, I can't wait that long. If everything looks good, the fish eats, etc., I seldom wait more than 14days, especially with the PriziPro, and I have used Cupramine also, and they can be used at the same time.

Oh yea, and, last time I researched the ich life cycle, I don't remember it taking at least
30 days to show up. Anyways, many, if not most of us have been thru this.
    Everyone wants to help.

Good luck, go slow, and Quarantine my friend, quarantine

I treat my fish with prazipro if I see signs or not and do a freshwater dip with methaline blue. I keep the fish in quarantine for a minimum of at least 4 weeks. If I see signs of ich, then I use cupramine.

So you only treat if something becomes noticeable? You simply keep them in the QT, feed and observe?

So you keep you QT at a certain concentration of Prazipro at all times?

Well I bought a QT tank and added a damsel just to get a hang of the process. I'll probably return him once my 55 gets set-up. It's a 2.5 gallon tank, with a piece of PVC. He is doing well, swimming around etc. I see no signs of any parasites or diseases, yet. He's been in QT for about 2 days now. He ate yesterday morning (quite a bit), but not this morning. He has a couple a beat up spots on his exterior which I attribute to transportation. He looks pretty pale at night and darts around the tank awkwardly at times, but colors up nicely during the day and swims normally. All in all, he looks pretty healthy.

I see some varying degrees on QT time mentioned in this thread. I too am impatient, but I need to do what's best for the fish (and my wallet ;)). What time period is best?

I have never medicated the water, I just let the fish go in my frag system for 4 weeks, or until they are healthy. If they had ich, i would move them to a 20 gallon to treat

So 4 weeks, that seems like a common time period.
