I put a hippo tang in my 55 a few months ago. It was a mistake on my part. The fish got ich. Luckily I had a qt tank on hand. I setup a 10 gallon. I treated the fish using hypo-salinity. It worked great, tang was cured. The fish was moved to a 250 gallon reef tank. Happy to say it's doing great.

Now I still have my quarantine tank running. I will continue to keep this tank running as a fail safe for the future. My questions are, do I need to do water changes if the tank has nothing it? Do I need to test water parameters as I do in my reef tank?

he probably already had ich when you got him, just putting him in a small 55 gallon stressed him and made it more pronounce. it is good he is now in a nice roomy tank i dont suspect it will come back as long as everything stays all good.

I knew I would get flack for the fish. Fair enough. But this was suppose to be directed toward my quarantine tank.

i was just dealing with the more important issue here. i dont believe it matters if you do or do not perform a water change on your qt

That sounds like a plan or just top off and do a water change when you do one with the display.

I have kept on running for years with just the occasional water change and routine top off.

What if any parameters do you test?

SG, Ammonia, Nitrate....Digital temp so that was never an issue. And again daily after introduction to make sure the addition of the fish does not cause an ammonia spike. The nitrifying bacteria decline in numbers when there are no fish present.

I sold the tank about 4 months ago, because I do not plan of buying any fish in the future.

    +1 on above

if your keeping it running just in case you would also need to ghost feed the tank, maybe a few pellets once a week to ensure you maintain a reasonable bacteria culture

but as you treated with hypo and no chemicals? you could consider
putting whatever you used for bio filtration into the sump of your main tank
then you could empty the QT tank, and re set up as and when required and at that time, transfer the mature filter / filter media from the DT to the QT

saves the trouble and cost of maintaining an empty tank - which IME would not stay empty

1st the shrooms end up in it, then a couple of Zoanthid frags, then the surplus Kenya trees and the QT slowly becomes an additional reef tank IMHE LOL?
