I've had my purple tang a week now and i can find how this happens. The calmest fish i have, and hes always got sand on him. at first i had no clue what this was i was but now he does it once a day. He gets it off in 10 mins or so but i just dont understand how he gets this stuff all over him haha

Are you sure it is sand and not ich? Ich lots of time looks like sand particles stuck to the fish. It also would come and go as the ich parasites go through their life cycle and drop off.

They are very prone to it with stress, diet etc. at that small. How fast does it appear and dis-appear?

the cleaner wil lhelp yes. but keep him well fed, keep the nori going too. if he keeps eating good, which will hopefully keep it strong and healthy , he should fight it off by himself.

if it is ich just leave him be. Dont do anything or try and move him, it will just stress him further. Try and make the tank as comfortable for him as possible. Dont put your hands in there, feed him often, etc. Clip some broccoli in there for him to graze on. He should be fine.

tangs need a veggie diet. very important to them. garlic wont prevent ich, it boosts a fishes urge to eat.
