I will be getting two fish this week. A Purple and a Yellow Tang. They will be bought at the same time so I can add them at the same time. But I have a question. I am a die hard QT guy. Ive even contemplated QT shrimp. However, Tangs in general do not do well in small tanks correct? How much does this affect Tangs? I do not want to cause any issues with them. I attempted to QT a Yellow Tang once and it eventually died from Ich. I have QT a Sailfin successfully though. Thoughts?

i personally do not quarantine any of my fish, i find it even more stressful than simple introduction and stress itself brings on parasites. and if i happen to get a parasite in the tank i simply treat it. but tangs are very prone to ich so quarantine would be a good idea and im sure a couple weeks in a 20 gallon or larger tank would work fine.

If you are going to quarantine these guys in the same tank, two things come to mind- first- ick/desease treatment in the qt, and secondly- places for them to hide in said qt- like rock or something. also keep the water temps the same from qt / main display, I use my display tanks water when I qt.

BTW, kick ick is the best coral safe stuff I have ever used- and IT WORKS.

I have a yellow, a purple, 2 blue hippo's, and a achilles tang- all love each other belive it or not. I am soon adding a pair of BJ triggers.

Tangs are also smarter then most fish- they know to avoid certain critters in my tank- such as my very large carpet anemone- however they can sometimes get a little agressive- towards ANY fish.

it all depends on the size of the fish and the size of your QT. Tangs are very territorial and will fight especially in a small cramped environment. being these two are very similar in body shape, species and other traits, I would NOT do two in a 30 gallon tank. you need at least 4' of swimming space if you want to do them both at once. putting them in too small of a tank MAY result in death of one due to fighting.

as another poster mentioned, make sure you have plenty of hiding and area for them to claim. also, to prevent them from dying of ich, are you going to QT them in HYPO salinity or use Copper for disease treatment?

yes, tangs are very intelligent fish. I have three of them and they are the best part of my tank. very entertaining. mine are hand fed too.

lastly, how large of a tank are they going into once QT is done?

oh yea, one thing we all forgot to mention- which applies to nearly all fishes:

similar shape and size fish will fight with each other- no mater the breed. perhaps that is why my 5 tangs do well together- but I am not sure.

my two blue hippo's are the same fish but one is large and the other medium.

the yellow and purple are nearly the same- but different colors

the achillies is completely different then the other 4.
