pump pre-filters

    Thanks for the clarification.

    I only have a strainer on mine, only catchs real big stuff.

    As has been said, I don't think it will improve the working life of the pump, the 'filter' going into it, and will drastically reduce the flow, usually not wanted however.

    Any filter bag/sock on the return to the sump?

    I have zero mechanical filtration outside of a skimmer. The pre filters are the only filter media I was using.

    The only filters I use on my 55 are the ones that came with my overflow. And I really only keep them on for noise! I clean them weekly though.

    I have zero mechanical filtration on my 29g. With a proper stocking level, CuC, feeding regimen, and routine maintenance, it's not really necessary. IMHO, it's just something more to clean. Most of what it traps is food for something in your tank, as well.
