It's the new newb with yet another question. On a new tank, when do you turn on the protein skimmer? I have heard of people running it from the start and also people waiting till later in the cycling process. I have a Red Sea MAX 130 (34 Gal.) And it has 2 145 gph power heads running 24/7. I also have a Koralia 3 motion pump running 15 minutes every 2 hours. The turbo protein skimmer runs at 320 gph. So any ideas let me know. Thanx

I would leave it off until the cycle is complete..you can leave your powerheads on

EDIT: the skimmer would take out organics that the bacteria need to eat..so less food for them..less bacteria..less stable of a tank

Thank you, that's what I thought but had heard 2 different opinions. I have learned that there seems to be multiple opinions on just about everything to do with marine tanks.

I personally agree with ir0001 and dont set mine up until maybe month 3, when I am about to start stocking properly ( every other week purchaing fish or corals etc)

some people add them earlier as its a good time to break them in which can take a few days, and finely tune them in advance of major live stock purchases
