I bought a Flame Angelfish a couple of weeks ago from LFS. The fish appeared very healthy other than a small nip out of one of its fins. I thought it had just gotten bitten by another fish. Over the past two weeks I have noticed that the fin is slowly getting smaller and has a white or pale color to it. I thought that it would have healed by now. The fish is swimming and active and feeds very well at this time. What could be wrong with its fin? I only have two small clown fish in the tank with it and they get along great.

A pic would help out, but if there are no other symptoms other than a receding fin with white color it sounds like good ol' fin rot.

I agree, without pics it sounds like fin rot. Is there any discoloration at the base of the fin (hard to see red on a flame, I know)?

Have you been adding any vitamins to the food? Do you have a quarantine tank?

    Possible Fin-Rot
Evident when the fins show degeneration and start to look ragged in appearance. The most common cause of fin rot is physical abuse, followed closely by poor water quality.
The bacteria responsible for further fin loss is a gram negative bacteria and can be treated in a quarantine tank with an appropriate anti-bacterial medication.
There are a couple other possibilities but this is more than likely the culprit.

I agree it is probably fin rot. What medicine should I use to treat it? I probably won't be able to do it anyway because it is impossible to catch fish in a reef tank without tearing it all down which is not an option. My water quality is excellent and both of my other fish are fine.

Bump on up. What is a good medication to treat for fin rot? Is it possible for my fish to recover from this on its own?
