I run a generator. As for how long that depends on the bio load of the tank – its not the filtration as much as it is temp and oxygen. But with zero power I would wrap the tank to help retain the heat. If the power was out for days I would get a generator.

I have a battery powered sump pump in my basement – so I would assume there are battery back up pumps.

I have several battery powered air stones that I keep on hand for just this reason. You can pick them up at any big box pet stores and usually run around 15.00. Personally, I would use these after being without power for about an hour or so....but I have a fairly high bio load and a couple of tangs....

If the temp in the house isn't too bad then the fish should be fine for at least several hours although it depends on how many fish u have and what sized tank. Make sure to keep the tank in the dark too so the fish go to sleep. For long periods of time u can add hot water bottles and stir the water by taking a cup or something and taking some ta nk water and pouring it into the tank to help oxygenate it. Good luck with it.
