canister filters are great for media use
dont toss it.
Get a good skimmer and the refugium will take time. I like caulerpa

 

thats what i think i have in my fuge not sure though and ill hopefully get a skimmer soon

 

I second or third the Ramora skimmer. My favorite LFS owner swears that they are the only HoB variety that he gaurantees wont flood the house. He isnt a fan of HoB octopus skimmers for some reason so I doubt he has tested them though.

You have a big enough cleanup crew so just chill for a few weeks and you will see a difference in the algae problem. My nitrates and phosphates always read 0 so the only way I can normally tell I am over feeding is when the chaeto in my fuge starts growing fast again.
