Pistol Shrimp

Hey guys! Im interested in keeping a Pistol shrimp but i heard they can be quite loud. Do they really make a lot of noise? Is it enough to drive me insane and keep me from sleeping? lol

From what I have read... They sound very similar to a mantis shrimp, well I have one of those and the noise doesn't bother me. (sounds like a shell lightly tapping on the glass) But I only hear the clicking one or two times an hour.
I guess it would depend on how often they click and how tolerant you are to the sound. I'm sure that someone who actually has one will speak up in a little bit.
Do you know what type you want to purchase (Symbiosis or Bullseye)? How close is your tank to your bed? lol

Pistol shrimp r so cool! before mine...ugh...got eaten i always loved to hear it snapping cuz it was fighting a mean crab lol...they r really cool buggers!

 

Depending on the size of the shrimp, they can startle you from time to time but it's not loud enough to make you jump out of your chair. Just remind yourself when you hear it that you have a pistol or you'll be checking your tank for cracks everytime you hear it

 

They can be heard througg water a 1/4 inch of glass, a door and a couple walls......fairly loud. BTW, is your name related to centipedes....scolopendra?

 

Thanks for your help guys, would they get along with cleaner shrimp? My name has nothing to do with centipedes or millipedes lol. The pede in my name is short for stampede, it is my name on a few other forums unrelated to fish.

 

No, given the opportunity, they will eat them. They have those "pistols" for a reason which is to stun their prey, which includes other shrimp.
