I know how expensive keeping a reef tank can be, even a small one. Especially when it comes to buying the equipment. I have that exact problem. Wanting a reef but not having a lot of money. This is what I have set up and with great success thus far.

No skimmer, sump or refugium! Just a fluval 205 canister filter (kept really clean, only carbon media inside). This was the most expensive piece of equipment on here as I baught it brand new $120.
    Powerhead (FREE)
    Heater (FREE)
    10gal tank (free)
Freshwater Canopy modified to support coral + Coralife mini compact flourescent 50/50 bulbs ( $50)

So all together on equipment I have spent only $170. Not bad at all. If I went with a way cheaper filter like a hang on back it probably would have only been about $80-$100.

    15lbs of live rock
unsure of how much sand I have
    2 oscellaris clown fish
    7 margarita snails
    5 hermit crabs
    green striped mushrooms
    blue/purple mushrooms
    red mushrooms
    kenya tree
    purple zoos
    eagle eye zoos
    anthelia
    devil's hand leather
    2 frogspawn
Also have a good size chunk of Chaeto behind the live rock.

I've had great healthy growth on all coral! Just gotta keep up on my water changes! here are the pics to prove it :D
