I have read somewhere that pickling lime works well at keeping calcium and somethin else in line. Is this true?

Once you get your Calcium and Alkalinity at the proper levels, you can mix pickling lime (kalkwasser) into your top off water and it will keep your levels maintained.

Most people use it as top off water, so if you lose a gal a day to evaporation then they would drip one gal of kalk a day... the amount of Ca(OH)2 that is added will depend on the need for it, a gallon can handle about 1 tsp of kalk before it is completely saturated

Not entirely true. Like most things, depending on source there are impurities. Ideally if you can find it you want to go with a reagent grade. Typically industrial and even food grade can have higher concentrations of heavy metals and other undesirables.

So add about 1 tsp of it for every gallon?
