What type of filter do you have? Sump, canister, wet dry?

do you mean putting GFO (phos remover) in a micron sock and putting that in your sump? IME I would not advise putting any type of media in a micron sock. LFS sell these nylon socks (nylon stocking works too) that are made to hold carbon, GFO, and other media that you can then put in a sump or HOB.

This all being said, you dont need to worry about using any media during the cycle period. after you have tested water and find the cycle is complete you can add GFO if your phosphate is high.

    You need consider this:
The filter sock is in the overflow which is probably the most concentrated flow of water in the system.

And then ask yourself this question:
What happens if the media I put in the sock breaks down (turns to powder) due to the high water flow action on it?

    And finally:
How do I clean up if the media breaks down.
