Is a phosban reactor and GFO reactor essentially the same thing?

My other question is since I already have a HOB filter with no sump, do I need a phosphate reactor? or can I just place GFO or phosban directly in my filter? thanks

Question 1 yes they are essentially the same thing. Question 2 you would want gfo to tumble, so no putting it in a hob filter will not work.

Yes...It just depends on what you fill it with. You can place a media bag in your filter. The problem with that is the GFO wont tumble, and being it is made of iron. It can become a brick.

but I can place phosban in the filter?

    not sure what to do.

    1. leave the filter and use it to run carbon, phosban, and mechanical filtration

2.buy GFO/carbon reactor and turn filter into mini-refugium

either way I will also eventually add a HOB skimmer

(if 2, is suggested, what do I use for mechanical filtration?)

I would go with option 2.... I don't have any mechanical filtration in my system and the water params are stable.

if you don't have an algae problem, you probably don't need it, but it won't hurt to use it. you can get chemipure media that contains gfo mixed with carbon and should work well with your hob filter.
