it's just a reactor. you can put any type of media in it. i have one and run Bulk Reef Supply GFO in it and then run nothing but carbon in my cannister. they're cheap too

Some say its a requirement for a reef tank. I just ordered my first one off BRS and im hoping it clears up this algae im getting. So once mine goes into action ill post back on how big of a change it makes.

I have a bulk reef supply dual reactor on both my reef and sea horse tank. I ran both without them for almost a year but now I wouldn't go without them.

I have a ton of softies in the seahorse tank and can tell if I have let the carbon run to long in it because they start getting pretty stressed when I do.

I bought one of the two little fishies reactors and recommend to anyone who wants one that they skip that POS and buy the Bulk Reef supply one.

they're cheap, they're easy. get it now. running GFO is something every reefer has to do eventually. phosphates get into your system through food preservatives, no way around it. if you start running a media for them now, you can avoid a build up of it and, subsequently, algae issues in the future.

i ran about a year without it and my phosphates got out of hand. they soak into the sand, rocks and existent algae and there's nothing to do but wait til they get used up. get one now and you're ahead of the game

Good call. Getting the RODI unit first is smart. like most ppl on this thread I also went with the BRS reactors. i run 2 separate ones 1 GFO, 1 Carbon. They are very well made very easy to use and is a great add to a reef. In my 2 year old reef i have been running the reactors for about 5 months now and by the 2nd week all my algae went bye bye and my corals looked much healthier. running 2 canisters also starved out my aiptasia outbreak where i had ~50 or so in my tank and within the same 2 week period of my algae dyeing off so did all the aiptasia... havent seen one since.

I think the deluxe model is about $50. but you also need to buy the media which is expensive if you buy the high quality stuff.

It really depends. Running 2 (1 GFO, 1 Carbon) will allow you to individually control the rate of flow through the canisters. I run my carbon canister at full flow with the maxi jet it came with and the GFO i run slower to prevent fines. also running 2 reactors will give you more ease of maintenance. If you want to run both media i would get 2 although you can get away with running both media in one canister. And if i had to choose which media to run between the 2 i would choose GFO.
