I don't think that alot of people are aware that it is for precisely this reason why things will never change at Petco. I've read many an account of salt water hobbiests going to work for Petco with the intention of changing the way they care for their fishstock only to end up severely frustrated and unemployed because they were not allowed deviate in any way whatsoever from the company's way of doing business.

Profit is the only motivation for these companies and until hobbiests realise that as a fact, and vote with their non purchases, then they will always behave in this manner. Well stated Roger :)

Matt, maybe you could add "Petco" to the swear filter as our own kind of protest.

It always amazes me... This is a general comment and not aimed at anyone, just me ranting a bit. This situation is the same over here, same hobbiests, same whining :(

Hobbiests buy from companies like Petco et al because they are convenient and cheaper, without care about the condition or otherwise of what they are buying, yet we have great sponsors on this site that are nowhere near supported enough by US.

So come on, let's all show Petco and the others that together we have some buying power! Next time you need something, come to 3reef, look at the banners and the sponsors of this site and buy from them. After all everytime you do, you not only deprive the likes of Petco, you also help 3reef survive.

in some kind of sick way, I kinda resent my Army being compared to Petco.
One thing I learned after working with foreign battle commanders.....they said they don't have a chance against our Army because our combat forces are highly skilled at thinking for themselves and adapting to the situation to create success on the battle field. Officers these days confer with their NCO's (middle management, to all you civilians) to work things out.

Big kudo's for standing for the right principles. I wish I were wrong when I say companies like Petco are always going to thrive because there are far more cheap and irresponsible pet owners who don't really have any business having pets that they can't afford to care for properly, and there are far too few owners that CAN afford to do the right things.

Hell, I know people that can't afford to feed their own kids, and are on food stamps, but think they aren't doing anything wrong by having 3 or more dogs.

i actually had the same thought on this, although i have extremely limited experience in saltwater,i've done just about everything you can do in fresh,i get a little upset when i go into these stores and see 10 gallon tanks with 50 small oscars in them,"plant" tanks that are yellow because all the plants are dead/dying, etc.etc. the one that gets me the most is when i observe a tank in wich one fish is triumphantly swimming back and forth across the whole tank while all the other inhabitants are hiding and cowering, all beat to crap and ready to die,MOVE THE DAMN FISH!,if i can see this after 30 seconds of observation i find it inexcusable that the people working there can't...there's three petco's within a half hour drive of my home. 1 is pretty good{they actually have a few hospital tanks! gasp!,1 is so,so and 1 {unfortunately the closest}is absolutely abysmal, boycotting isnt enough i feel because this won't change anything for the animals in question, ask for a manager and politely explain to them that they're staff is clueless and why... atleast that way theres a chance for improvement,it may even land you a part time job with discounts on gear/livestock.;)
