So I have a lot of animals at my house. It's safe to say we have a farm here. 3 dogs, 6 cats and two tanks. I'm just trying to figure out what negative effects if any, pet hair would have in our tanks. I know that pet hair falls on the suface of my water and goes down the overflow and in to the filter sock. I guess I'm more concerned about the oils and such leaching out into the water column. Any thoughts on this guys?

I dont know if there are any problems with it. the only thing I could think of is if the cat/dog/goat got into something bad and that hair ended up in the tank. I still get some mystery dog hair in my water mixing buckets. I haven't had this dog in 2 years but yet his hair is still everywhere despite moving to a new house. Never had an issue myself.

I wouldn't think it would be a major issue unless you have a sweater floating on the surface, providing your cleaning your socks often. The only thing i can think of that might cause serious harm would be flea medications/pesticides,so i'm not really sure.

I had a ferret jump in to my tank a few months ago. Nothing happened to my coral or fish. The entire animal didn't cause a problem so i doubt some fur will.

When it happened I was furious. The GF wanted to show me how Lily almost jumped from her back in to the tank. Before I could say anything, Lily was in the tank. Lily hates bathes, but loves trying to jump in to the tank.

LOL glad you all don't think it's an issue. I had just been wondering about it lately and wanted others opinons. I guess I don't need to worry too much if one of our cats decides it wants to go for a swim. :) Thanks for your input all!!

The hair can get around impeller shafts, and cause them to seize up. My cat has a bad habit of drinking out of the RO/DI water bucket before I add the salt, when I'm making new water. He was getting his hair in it. I had to teach him not to do it anymore.

Apart from that, I would think it could be toxic if you treat your animals for fleas and they have medicine on them. That stuff is supposed to last 3 months, so it could be on there. Run some carbon or purigen just to be safe.

Thanks! I always run carbon so I'm good there. No fleas around here...I think it's too hot for them. ;)
