I am researching overflows so I know which one to get when I go to set up my sump.

This sump will be for a 29 gallon brood stock tank that will be separated into 3 sections for 3 pairs of clowns. The other tank the sump will support will be a 40 breeder. I'm not sure what size the sump will be as of yet. I plan on drilling the 29 gallon tank seeing as it is empty right now. My 40 breeder has been set up for around 6 months now and I don't think that I can drill it now lol. I love the bean animal overflow set up, but I don't know how feasible it is for my DT.

With that being siad, what does everybody use for overflow boxes and why? I was looking CPR's, but I have just started looking. Thanks for the help. ;D

ive got a cpr overflow. i have a big one with dual downpipes (but i onoly use one). The aqualift pump that creates the siphon causes me some trouble sometimes and it also makes a loud gurgling sound sometimes from the downpipe sucking in air. Works well though and is built well

Do you have to use the aqua lifter pump? I know it is recommended.

um yeah pretty much. I guess once you get the siphon created you could just plug the hole i guess, but i think air bubbles might accumulate and that's why people recommend using the pump. The pump is fine as long as it is working well, but sometimes mine like to stop working so it poses a threat of overflowing my main tank. BUT my two aqua lift pumps were used with my tank like 4 years ago that i took down so that may be why they are funky.
The gurgling sound can also be reduced by inserting air tubing into the top of the bulkhead strainer fitting

I have read where people use a power head to start the siphon. The reason behind this they say, is so that when/if the power goes out, the siphon starts right back up. Have you had any problems with flooding?

I did have one problem with flooding with my tank years ago but i forget what the cause was. The powerhead thing may be a good idea though. I just ordered a reef keeper and float switches for an ato and to cut off the power to my return if my main tank level gets too high.

The problem with the aqualift is that if the power does go out or the siphon is lost, it takes a while to remove all the air and create a siphon again. The powerhead method may pull the air out faster and therefore prevent your return pump from overflowing your main tank.

I used glass-holes and really like it, but if I was doing it all over again, I'd go bean animal for sure

I have been using the eshopps pf 300 overflow and have been having good luck with it. I didn't like the weir design of the cpr, I lost power the other day and didn't have a problem with siphon loss at all. Once the power came back and the return pump kicked back on, it picked up right where it left off. I would recommend eshopps. They're simple, but they work.
