    FYI I was answering the Post by JAS wanting to know what a closed loop was. Seems he as most are confused as to what a closed loop is, But in this hobby many stick their Name or the wrong term on different things. Like the stand pipe guy and the Carlson guy who stuck his name to a flush bucket that had been in use since 1890's :)

    I like to run 15-20x's the tank volume with return pump from my sump and power heads. You dont want all your flow to come from your return pump because you need to direct flow in the tank to prevent dead spots. For a 180g tank I would prefer about 1000-1200gph running through my sump and refuge.
