Hey everyone, Just thought I'd give yall an update.

For those of you that didn't see my other thread, my tank overflowed while I was gone (living in little rock for the summer). All the corals died, fish are all okay. SG got down to 1.008. As soon as I got the dreaded phone call I immediately got in my truck and drove the 8 hours back to Auburn. When I walked in the corals were already gone and the fish were laying on the bottom gasping. It has been about a month and all the fish are back to normal and the tank actually looks pretty good. Running sumpless ATM just to avoid other incidents.

    Anyway..

College life isn't the greatest for reef tanks. I am in the Co-Op program which means I alternate between work/school semesters. I am currently working for the summer and have one more work term left in the spring. I just don't want to risk leaving my tank for that long again.

I plan on keeping my mantis tank. I love that tank. Water change every 2 months is IT! Zero maintenance other than that. I will be changing the reef over to a FW planted tank. I already have a good CO2 system so the only thing I will have to do is downgrade the lighting. I am going to keep my skimmer, calcium reactor, etc. because I plan on going back to SW after school.

I am still going to post and help out here where I can. And when I get the FW all set up in August I will be sure to post pictures! I'm actually pretty excited about it. Thinking of getting tons of smaller fish or maybe a few discus. Haven't quite decided yet.

I hope everyone is having a great summer!

    Ivan

She's there (in auburn) right now. She was just at work when the tank started overflowing. I still have no idea how it happened. The Aqualifter pump on the overflow works fine. After I came back and fixed everything it happened again the next week. She caught it the second it started happening though so it was no big deal. I'm in auburn for the 4th right now so I'm just doing a big water change then heading back to Little Rock in an hour or so.
I just want to keep the fish alive til I come back for good in august.

Thanks for the link! I do like the look of a big school of tetras. I may do that with a pair of discus.

Edit: That website it awesome. They have some pretty good looking pieces of driftwood that just got me really excited. A lot cheaper than Live Rock!

At least you were able to save the fish.

I had my 3 foot 35g in my college dorm. I had a snowflake eel and a panther grouper in it. There were always fishermen with extra minnows so I rarely had to pay to feed them.

Man that really sucks! So many good people dropping out this summer. I hope to see your avatar on a few threads now and again. And keep us updated on your mantis. Sorry that this happened and the best of luck with the planted tank!

Its all good. I'm confident in my saltwater abilities now. An advanced freshwater setup will be a new challenge. More stuff to learn! The mantis is doing great. He has grown so much since I left in may. He got too big for his rock den so he has moved to the pvc den which makes me happy. His tomato clown counterpart is also doing well. The corals in there are really growing too. I can't believe they're thriving under 15w of actinic.

    Thanks fisherman, I'll be around!

I'm glad I still have the mantis tank too. I probably wouldn't be switching the 40 over to FW if I didn't have it. I've got too much salt runnin through my veins to quit cold turkey.
